Studies of Bovine Erythrocytes in Anaplasmosis. I. Flocculating Properties of Stromata in Water.

Abstract
Differences in the flocculating characteristics of erythrocytic stromata prepared from blood and calves infected with Anaplasma marginale and uninfected calves are described. Stromata from normal calves settled rapidly whereas stromata from infected calves remained in suspension. The degree of suspension was related to the total phospholipid content of the stromata during the course of the anemia produced during the disease. The fragility indices were also related to the level of total phospholipid content of the stromata. The differences in flocculating properties are due to a change in isoelectric point brought about by the altered total phospholipid content.
