Abstract
-The C-terminal amino acids of gelatin were determined by means of hydra-zinolysis. A procedure was developed for the separation of the hydrazides of all the amino acids from the C-terminal amino acids by treatment with p-formylphenyltrimethylammonium iodide followed by treatment with dinitrofluorobenzene. The proportion of acidic amino acids and [beta]-hydroxyamino acids in the C-terminal amino acids was approximately 4 times that of the non-polar substituted amino acids and the imino acids while basic acids were absent. As a comparison the N-terminal amino acids of gelatin were also determined and a small proportion of proline units hitherto undetected shown to be present.
