The Maximum Surgical Blood Order Schedule: Choice of Methods Used in Its Development

Abstract
A comparative analysis was performed of methods used for the preparation of a maximum surgical blood order schedule (MSBOS). Transfusion data were used from 764 patients who received 2,110 units of blood. Varying MSBOS results were obtained from the same data depending on the method of analysis. Factors such as the total number of patients per procedure, the number of patients crossmatched, the number of patients transfused, and the number of units transfused per patient also influenced the results obtained. These factors need to be considered when selecting the method of guideline preparation. The advantages of one method over the other are noted.
