Abstract
INVASIVE fibrous thyroiditis, first described by Riedel1 in 1896, is also known as Riedel's struma, woody or ligneous thyroiditis, and "eisenhart" goiter. It is characterized by the slowly progressive invasion of part of or all the thyroid and adjacent cervical tissues by dense fibrous or collagenous connective tissue. It is an uncommon disease, and its etiology remains unknown. The case described herein is reported because of several unusual features. These included the acute onset of symptoms with pain and tenderness in the thyroid area, the remarkable size of the struma, and the presence of thyroglobulin antibodies in significant titer in the patient's serum.
