Magneto-Optic Study of the Critical Properties of YIG

Abstract
We have used the Faraday rotation of 3.39μ laser light to measure the reduced total magnetization, σ, of yttrium iron garnet as a function of internal magnetic field H. Our measurements are for 53 isotherms over the temperature range T c − 109° C < T < T c + 13° C , where we find the critical temperature to be T c = 550·41±0.02° K . We find the critical exponents to be given by β = 0.370 ±0.005 , δ = 4.65 ±0.1 , and γ = 1.35 ±0.02 . We also find that all data for σ < 0.50 are consistent with the scaling laws and an equation of state such as that proposed by Widom. We have experimentally determined the scaled magnetization m = σ∣1 − T/T c ∣ −β as a function of scaled magnetic field h = ( g μ B SH/kT c )/∣1 − T/T c ∣ βδ over the range 0.018 < m < 8.12 and 3 × 10 −3 < h < 5 × 10 5 .
