Abstract
We have used the Faraday rotation of 3.39μ laser light to measure the reduced total magnetization, σ, of yttrium iron garnet as a function of internal magnetic field H. Our measurements are for 53 isotherms over the temperature range T c − 109° C < T < T c + 13° C , where we find the critical temperature to be T c = 550·41±0.02° K . We find the critical exponents to be given by β = 0.370 ±0.005 , δ = 4.65 ±0.1 , and γ = 1.35 ±0.02 . We also find that all data for σ < 0.50 are consistent with the scaling laws and an equation of state such as that proposed by Widom. We have experimentally determined the scaled magnetization m = σ∣1 − T/T c ∣ −β as a function of scaled magnetic field h = ( g μ B SH/kT c )/∣1 − T/T c ∣ βδ over the range 0.018 < m < 8.12 and 3 × 10 −3 < h < 5 × 10 5 .Keywords
