Detoxification of Long-Term Methadone Patients: Problems and Prospects

Abstract
Patients studied met certain eligibility requirements which were thought to enhance the probability of successful detoxification. A total of 228 (10.4%) of 2814 patients in a methadone maintenance treatment program were included in the project. A follow-up on 63 patients who had completed detoxification indicated that 22.2% claimed abstinence from all drugs and were reporting to the clinic, 47.6% claimed abstinence but had not reported to the clinic, 14.3% returned to methadone maintenance and 15.9% were lost to contact. The importance of adequate counseling during detoxification was emphasized.
