Abstract
DL-methionine at two levels (20 and 40 gm per 70 kg of body weight) was administered in combination with isocarboxazid to 9 male schizophrenics. In 7 patients on both dosage levels marked behavioral changes were observed which are described in terms of two components. One component was characterized by symptoms common during intoxication as exemplified by euphoria, somnolence, disorienta-tion or confusion; the other component appeared to be a recurrence and accentuation of individual psychopathological symptoms. In general the accentuation of individual psychopathology was more severe under the higher doses of DL-methionine than under the lower doses. A mechanism is suggested by which the administration of methionine gives rise to the formation of psychotogenic compounds in the body. Keywords
