Abstract
Routine intravenous feeding delivers only a fraction of a debilitated patient's nutritional needs; the hypertonic, individually tailored solution used in parenteral “hyperalimentation” raises nitrogen and caloric intake to levels sufficient for tissue synthesis. To prevent infection, the catheterization of the superior vena cava, through which the solution is delivered, is approached with the same care as a surgical incision. Keywords
