THE OCCURRENCE OF ANAEROBIC GRAM-NEGATIVE DIPLOCOCCI IN THE NORMAL HUMAN MOUTH

Abstract
A study was made of the morph. and biochem. characteristics of 49 strains of strictly anaerobic Gram-negative diplococci isolated from the mouth. In addition, 1 strain of anaerobic Neisseria and 2 of Veillonella obtained from Dr. A. R. Prevot, 7 strains of Veillonella obtained from Dr. E. G. D. Murray, and 2 strains of Micrococcus lactilvticus obtained from Dr. E. L. Foubert, were studied. All strains examined showed striking similarity and appeared to belong to the same genus with the exception of the single strain of anaerobic Neisseria which resembled a streptococcus. It is suggested that the description of genus Veillonella be changed to "anaerobic Gram-negative diplococci" and that the classification "anaerobic Neisseria" be discontinued.
