Abstract
This chapter provides Swedish motor vehicle industry. It deals with some general trends of restructuring and regional change within Swedish manufacturing as a whole. A number of significant restructuring processes can be identified, most of them associated with a growing internationalization of the economy. In 1986, the latest year for which statistics are available, the motor vehicle industry accounted for around 10 per cent of the Swedish manufacturing industry, in terms of employment as well as value added. The changes within the motor vehicle industry have many characteristics in common with the restructuring of the Swedish manufacturing industry in general, but also a number of features that make this industry distinct. The Swedish motor vehicle industry has always been located predominantly in southern Sweden, and in the case of Volvo the west coast has been the core region.
