Abstract
An increase of interfacial toughness, associated with increases in in-plane or antiplane shear components, has been noted for a number of bimaterial combinations. Some recent results are reviewed which suggest that the toughening effect could not be completely accounted for by plastic dissipation, bulk viscoelastic dissipation or asperity shielding. The possibility of changes in crack front shape under various loading directions is therefore considered. Keywords
