SECOND LOOK SURGERY AFTER RADIATION THERAPY FOR ADVANCED STAGES OF CANCER OF THE OVARY

Abstract
1. A series of 17 patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma who had exploratory laparotomy, 3,000 rads abdominopelvic irradiation, thioTEPA and second look surgery is reported. 2. Tumor regression was complete or sufficient to permit gross total removal of the tumor in 9 of 17 cases. Microscopic disease was present in all cases, however. 3. A 3 year survival of 41 per cent was achieved. The average survival of all cases was 29 months; 20 months free of recurrence. Three of the 17 cases remain free of disease from 48 to 77 months.
