CLINICAL STUDIES WITH TOLMETIN: OPEN STUDY AND A DOUBLE-BLIND CROSS-OVER COMPARISON WITH ASPIRIN IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Abstract
Twenty out-patients with rheumatoid arthritis took part in a preliminary open study to investigate the use of tolmetin in rheumatoid arthritis; two comparisons were made with indomethacin and the remainder with aspirin. The results were favourable for tolmetin and the number of side-effects was low. The multi-centre double-blind trial which followed studied 40 out-patients and compared aspirin with tolmetin. Improvements were found in grip strength and active joint count, but not in pain score, morning stiffness and proximal interphalangcal joint circumference.
