Chemische Spannungsänderungen von Kollagenfasern

Abstract
The collagen fibers of tendons contract with considerable force (tension) in concentrated NaCIO4 solution. The covalent crosslink originates from lysinoaldehyde. Its tension becomes activated when the hypertonic solution removes the latch action of the intramolecular waterbonds. It is therefore reversible in isotonic solution. The tension decreases on repetition till it finally disappears completely when all aldehyde groups are oxydised to the Schiff basealdimine: at this stage collagen becomes insoluble in water.
