Aeroallergens — Some Current Views

Abstract
After several decades of relative professional indifference, interest in inhaled allergens and their transport as aerosols has been reawakened recently. This revival has coincided with an increasing awareness of the limitations of "gravity" sampling — especially for smaller spores — and with innovative application of mechanical, volumetric samplers. Resulting collections have emphasized the previously unsuspected abundance of asco- and basidiospores in many areas and permitted accurate estimates of relative prevalence for pollens and additional spores of different size classes. Miniaturized samplers also have facilitated studies near the ground which have revealed both site-to-site differences outdoors and distinctive, indoor microbial floras. Where feasible, direct microscopy of particles has been especially useful, with culture and, recently, immunochemical assay providing complementary analytical approaches.
