Abstract
The absorption spectrum of polyethylene is reported from onset of absorption, at about 1780, to 1050 Å. The spectrum and probably also the solid‐phase ionization potential, is shown to be similar to those of short chain n‐alkanes in the vapor phase. No evidence is found of ``dissociative excitons'' or of an intramolecular band structure in polyethylene, while the probable ionization potential seems higher than suggested by some theoretical calculations. Keywords
