Applications of Electronics to Meteorology*

Abstract
Believing that many people with meteorological interests have not had an opportunity to learn how radar and other electronic devices have become important aids in weather observational work, the writer has attempted to prepare a brief and simple explanation of these methods. The use of radar to detect and track thunderstorms and rain showers is explained as are the methods of obtaining winds aloft by radar. The use of the “Rawinsonde” in which pressure, temperature, humidity and winds aloft data are obtained simultaneously is also explained. “Sferics”, although of rather limited use to the continental meteorologist is treated briefly.
