Abstract
The conception of mental disorder as illness carries wide social implications and the career of the mentally sick person is affected. Many now live free in the community. But it is difficult to separate reactions to social situations from the symptoms of disease. Yet the rationale for treating mental disorder in the community depends on the distinction between them. Keywords
