Abstract
The melanic form of Oedaleus senegalensis, var. dimidiatus Bolivar, 1889, from the Cape Verde Islands is described. Its probable relationship to the sympatric normal form is discussed and the probable reason for its absence from the African mainland is presented, based on the prevailing easterly wind patterns off the West African coast. The possible causes and significance of melanic variants in Oedaleus and in Locusta migratoria migratorioides (R. & F.) and Pyrgodera armata (F.-W.) are discussed.
