Abstract
The often discussed problem, whether it is the lymphocyte or the monocyte, which forms the macrophage of inflammation, could be solved: this kind of macrophages are transformed monocytes of the blood. In rats the white blood cells were labelled with H3-thymidine or India ink. After that a sterile inflammation of the subcutis (modification of Rebuck''s skin window) was caused. By comparing the characteristic labelling pattern of the different leukocytes with the labelling of the cells of the inflammatory exudate the identity of monocytes and macrophages could be shown. Keywords
