Abstract
We propose a kinetic theory for electron-drift-velocity maxima in polyatomic gases. The case of methane is considered in detail, and good agreement with experiment is obtained with use of model cross sections. The Boltzmann equation is solved directly by applying an iterative numerical technique, which converges well when inelastic scattering effects are important. Keywords
