Flexible Membrane Hydrostatic Air Bearing

Abstract
The ordinary hydrostatic air bearing requires a very smooth surface upon which to operate. A flexible membrane used as part of the air bearing eliminates this restriction. The membrane shape, pressure distribution, and minimum air gap as functions of bearing load and flow rate are determined by the simultaneous solution of a reduced form of the Navier-Stokes equation and the membrane analogy equation. Experimental measurements verify the approximate mathematical theory.
