Establishment and Maintenance of a Hospital Glucose Meter Program

Abstract
A ward-level glucose meter program was established and maintained in our Health Sciences Centre, a l,100 bed teaching hospital serving both adults and newborns. To achieve clinically acceptable results, it was necessary to introduce a nurse “certification” program for meter users. Guidelines for acceptable reflectance meter blood glucose results were established with the assistance ofdiabetologists. Quality assurance consisted of a quality control being assayed and recorded daily by each ward, a blind control (glucose level unknown to the wards) sent to each ward for analysis every two weeks, and a monthly ward level inspection to check the condition of the meters, the performance of the daily control, and the proper storage ofnonexpired test strips. The glucose meter program has been running successfully for two years.
