Digestible and Metabolizable Energy Content of Feed Ingredients for Rats

Abstract
The digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of several grains, protein sources and fats were determined for the growing rat by the chromic oxide balance technique using a diet containing 40% of glucose as the reference ingredient. All test ingredients replaced in full the glucose in reference diet except fats which substituted for 10% of glucose. The DE and ME of glucose were 3.69 and 3.61 kcal/g dry matter and are similar to those reported for pigs. ME values of grains and fats for the rat were similar to values reported for chicks, whereas ME values for high protein content ingredients were higher for the rat than for the chick.
