Abstract
This paper presents a concise formulation of continuum theory for nematic liquid crystals, both static and dynamic theory being discussed in turn. The emphasis is on the various assumptions behind the theory, and the experimental evidence supporting them. The resulting theory contains a fair number of material parameters, and progress concerning their measurement is assessed. Also, whenever possible, mention is made of problems that remain unresolved. Keywords
