Sampling for the Egyptian Alfalfa Weevil: A Comment on the Sweep-Net Method12

Abstract
The square-foot and sweep-net sampling methods are compared in analysis of larval population trends of Hypera brunneipennis (Boheman). The efficiency of the sweep-net method in terms of the number of sweeps required to estimate accurately the actual larval population was found to vary greatly with the age-class structure of the study population, Inferences are drawn relative to the use of both techniques to provide similar information for the closely-related alfalfa weevil H. poslica (Gyllenhal). The sweep net is criticized relative to its current use as the primary sampling tool upon which chemical control recommendations for these species are based in California.
