Abstract
The authors have calculated the Helmholtz free energy of liquid alkali metals using two kinds of one-component plasma structure factor as reference systems. Various thermodynamic quantities are calculated with the variationally determined plasma parameters and are compared with each other as well as with the data observed near the melting point. The overall agreement with experiment is satisfactory, but there appears to be a conflict concerning a consistent description of the excess entropies and diffraction data. The mean density approximation term, which might play a significant role in the isothermal compressibility argument, is evaluated carefully and it is found that this term is, at least near the melting point, not as important as Young's analysis (1982) suggests. Keywords
