New Concepts in Primate Production

Abstract
Current problems in the supply of and biomedical demand for various primate species were considered in a conference held in Seattle. The keynote address emphasized that 95% of primates used for research in the USA are imported. Although primate utilization has decreased during the last several years, the current demand may well exhaust the available supply of at least some species, e.g. Aotus trivirgatus. Subsequent speakers addressed different facets of the problem and its solution, including new attempts at large-scale domestic production, greater utilization of small, relatively inexpensive species, and conservation and breeding programs in the countries of origin.
