Behavior of Bored Piles in Beaumont Clay

Abstract
Axial load tests were conducted on four full-sized instrumented bored piles in layered stiff, fissured clay in Houston, TX. The geometry and method of construction were varied in order to investigate the effect of these parameters on development of side shear. Reduced load transfer was found near the tops and bases of the three piles installed in the dry, with the greatest load transfer near the middle. The presence of a bell appeared to make little difference in the short-term pattern of development of load transfer. The average load transfer for the piles installed in the dry was near one-half of the undrained shear strength of the soil. The single pile installed with the aid of drilling mud mobilized ultimately about one-third less of the shear strength of the soil in side shear due to the presence of entrapped mud. A mathematical expression is presented for the computation of side resistance based on the test results.
