The effect of polyaspartamides on drug‐metabolizing enzymes

Abstract
Rat liver β‐D‐glucuronidase was inhibited in vitro by a 1% concentration of dextran and polyvinylpyrrolidone at low enzyme concentrations. Pentosan polysulphate showed a similar effect, while three derivatives of the polyaspartamide were inactive. Microsomal aniline hydroxylase was inhibited by a 0.75% concentration of all polymers tested, the most active being the lysine derivative of polyaspartamide. No effect on the cytochrome P‐450 ‐ carbon monoxide reaction was detected. Microsomal aminopyrine demethylase activity was only slightly depressed by polymers, except for pentosan polysulphate, which showed stimulation. The carboxyethyl derivative of polyaspartamide induced in vivo the activity of N‐acetyltransferase.
