Quantitative Variations in Total and Soluble Collagen in Testes of Prepubertal and Adult Rats

Abstract
Total and soluble collagen (neutral and citrosoluble fractions) from albuglnea and glandular tissue of prepubertal and adult rat testes were determined with the following results: In the albuginea total collagen increased significantly with age; soluble collagen, however, decreased progressively with age; in glandular tissue, comprising seminiferous tubules and intertubular structures, no significant variation was observed in the content of total collagen; soluble collagen, however, showed an increase at a prepubertal age (around 20 days), followed by a decrease in adulthood; a progressive increase with age was observed in the absolute amount of total collagen in the albuginea and in the glandular tissue. The significance of the variations observed in the amount of collagen in both structures is discussed in relation to gonadal maturation, mechanical forces and permeability of the tubular wall.
