Abstract
Maternal serum IR-HPL levels were determined serially, in several groups of abnormal pregnancies, to evaluate their clinical usefulness. In addition, serum levels of the hormone at term were correlated with both the weight of the placenta and of the newborn. It was shown that serial monitoring of serum IR-HPL is useful to follow the integrity of placental function, particularly when heightened risk of placental failure is likely. Such situations were shown in this study to include diabetes, hypertension, retarded fetal growth, impending spontaneous abortion, fetal isoimmunization and disorders threatening vascular function of the placenta. Edema of and fibrin deposition within the placenta frequently explain ill-matched placental weight and serum IR-HPL levels. Keywords
