Abstract
Thirty-two sexually mature gilts were assigned to four doses of ICI 33828 (20, 40, 60 or 80 mg./day). Treatment was initiated on day 5 of the estrous cycle and continued until autopsy at day 25. Four of eight gilts at the 20 mg. and 40 mg./day level and one gilt at the 60 mg./day level showed estrus while on treatment. The mean corpora lutea number was greater (P<.05), while the follicular fluid weight tended to be less (Pvs. those ovulating on the 40 mg. treatment. Twenty-five percent of the gilts on the 40 mg. level developed cystic follicles. The data indicates that estrus can occur without total ovulation at low doses of ICI 33828. The ICI 33828 compound blocks ovulation, estrus and follicular growth at different dose levels, with ovulation being blocked at the lowest dose. Copyright © 1969. American Society of Animal Science .
