Abstract
It was possible to modify the "granuloma pouch" technique (originally devised for the study of inflammation) so that it permits the establishment, in a circumscribed connective-tissue cavity, of such tissue resistance that even concentrated croton oil, applied constantly during a period of more than 200 days, causes no necrosis or perforation to the outside. Among 7 rats treated with 100% croton oil in this manner. 5 developed highly malignant sarcomas in the granulomatous tissue immediately surrounding the deposit of irritant. Neoplasms so induced grow rapidly and can metastasize to the lung. They are also readily transplantable and eventually fatal to other rats of the same strain. Keywords
