Abstract
A novel application is reported of long-period fibre gratings produced in non-high-birefringence fibre as fibre optic load sensors based on the measurement of the transverse strain induced birefringence. A transverse strain sensitivity some 800 times higher than that previously reported for fibre Bragg gratings has been achieved. Keywords
