Fluorescent Whitening Agents

Abstract
Sulfonated aromatic aldehydes strongly sensitize the yellowing of wool by simulated sunlight, especially for exposure in the wet state. Compounds of this class are formed when stilbene-type fluorescent whitening agents are irradiated, either in solution or on wool. The possibility that these sulfonated benzaldehyde derivatives are responsible for the accelerated photoyellowing of fluorescently whitened wool is discussed. It is concluded that they may be important in the photoyellowing of whitened fabrics in the wet state, although they play little part in the photoyellowing of dry fabrics.
