Abstract
Patients (43) with various renal and perirenal abscesses were reviewed. A primary renal etiology was noted for nearly every abscess in or adjacent to the kidney, irrespective of the type of abscess. The concept that the renal carbuncle was a metastatic abscess whose origin lied at some distant site may be no longer applicable. Despite earlier recognition of symptoms, improved diagnostic techniques and better therapy the morbidity and mortality of abscesses in and adjacent to the kidney remain high, suggesting the important role of associated medical conditions and the need for early aggressive therapy. This publication has 21 references indexed in Scilit:
