Abstract
A 41 yr old man with hypothalamic hypopituitarism that persisted for 2 yr after discontinuation of exogenous dexamethasone was treated with bilateral ECT [electroconvulsive therapy] for severe chronic depression. The depression cleared completely and permanently, based on responses to 4 metyrapone stress tests in a 2 yr follow-up period. ECT may be an effective treatment for persistent hypothalamic-pituitary suppression, even in the absence of a psychiatric disorder. This publication has 20 references indexed in Scilit:
