Abstract
A survey of 33 cancer patients with stable chronic lymphoedema of the arm was conducted to ascertain which modalities of treatment were best complied with in the long term. Of the patients, 67% continued to moisturize the skin, though only half of these did so daily, while 97% continued to wear a compression sleeve, though not all did so daily. Almost 75% carried out the recommended arm exercises (though not all did so daily) and/or used the affected arm for all normal household tasks. Massage was used by 15 patients with truncal oedema. The form and area of massage varied considerably. Pneumatic compression was used by only four patients (12%). The most common continuing problem was finding clothes to fit the swollen arm (approximately 80%). About half the patients considered that they had reduced arm and hand function and half continued to experience pain. Continued attendance at the lymphoedema clinic was considered by many patients (73%) to be psychologically supportive. Keywords
