Abstract
Hydrology is considered in the context of the solar system, the water-related cycles of geophysics, the human environment, and international scientific cooperation. Global water balances and dynamic hydrological models are briefly described. The existence of different levels of description of hydrological phenomena is referred to and recent attempts to formulate hydrological laws at basin scale briefly reviewed. Keywords
