Abstract
The susceptibility to penicillin of penicillinase-producing bacteria is variable. Some strains in spite of their ability to produce this enzyme are quite susceptible to this antibiotic. Individual cells of such strains are as sensitive as those of strains which do not produce the enzyme. The degree of resistance is related to the speed with which organisms produce the enzyme rather than to the amt. that they produce. Although production of penicillinase may increase the resistance of Gram-negative organisms, it is not the primary factor in their resistance to penicillin. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
