Abstract
SUMMARY WOINARSKI, J.C.Z., D.F. DORWARD and J.M. CULLEN. 1983. Variation in the Pardalotus striatus complex in south-eastern Australia. Emu 83: 82–93. Geographic variation in Striated Pardalotes in south-eastern Australia is complicated, and has led to considerable taxonomic controversy. This variation was investigated during one breeding season by examining 290 breeding adults from 56 breeding colonies (demes) in south-eastern Australia. Twenty-nine characters were considered, and these fell into three broad groupings, one of which related to geographical and environmental parameters and included the main character, wing stripe width, on which nomenclature in the Pardalotus striatus complex has been based. The taxonomic significance of this group of characters will be evaluated when its significance in reproduction and mating selectivity is known. Keywords
