‘PlayMobile’ for Blind Infants

Abstract
SUMMARY: The ‘PlayMobile’ has been designed to help develop cognitive and motor skills in blind infants. It consists of an expandable metal rod which fits varying widths of cot, play‐pen or doorway. Two hollow, ridged tubes are attached to the rod by springs, and from these are suspended four interchangeable objects which vary in shape and texture. The function of the ‘PlayMobile’ is to provide a stimulating environment for the infant and to encourage him to explore and to learn from the different properties and structures in his environment.RÉSUMÉ: ‘PlayMobile’ pour nourrissons aveuglesUn dispositif—“le PlayMobile”—a été construit pour aider l'efficience cognitive et motrice de nourrissons aveugles. Il consiste en deux tubes creux et rayés (l'un de plastique, l'autre de métal) attachés à un bâton extensible de métal par deux ressorts. Un triangle d'aluminium, un anneau de caoutchouc, une crécelle en bois et un sac á haricots en velours pendent de l'extrémité des tubes et sont interchangeables. Le ‘PlayMobile’ s'adapte à un lit, à un pare, à un couloir, à un encadrement de porte ou peut être suspendu entre deux chaises. Le but est de procurer un environnement stimulant et, on l'espère, encourager le nourrisson aveugle à explorer pour faire l'apprentissage des différentes propriétés et structures de l'environnement.ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Playmobil für blinde KleinkinderEs wird eine Vorrichtung—das ‘Playmobil'—beschrieben, die zur Förderung der Entwicklung kognitiver und motorischer Fähigkeiten bei blinden Kleinkindern entwickelt wurde. Sie besteht aus zwei hohlen, eingekerbten Röhren (eine aus durchsichtigem Plastik, die andere aus Metall), die durch zwei Federn an einem elastischen Metallseil befestigt sind. Am Ende der Röhren hängen eine Triangel aus Aluminium, ein Gummiring, eine Holzrassel und ein Bohnenbeutel aus Cord. Diese Gegenstände sind austauschbar. Das Playmobil paßt in ein Kinderbett, einen Laufstall, einen Flur oder in eine tur̈ oder es kann zwischen zwei Stühlen ausgespannt werden. Consiste en dos tubos huecos y con bordes (uno de plástico y otro de metal) fijados a un eje de metal expansible por medio de dos muelles. Al final de los tubos penden un triángulo de alumino, un anillo de goma, un sonajero de madera y un rosario de cuentas, los cuales son intercambiables. El ‘PlayMobile’ puede adaptarse a una cama, parque, pasadizo o dintel de una puerta, o puede ser suspendido entre dos sillas. Su función es proporcionar un entorno estimulante y, se espera, que estimule al niño ciego a explorar y aprender acerca de las diferentes propiedades y estructuras de su entorno.
