Abstract
1. Uganda has a wide variety of habitat types in a limited geographical area. The sites where recordings of Ruspolia have been made are briefly classified and described. 2. The distribution and general biology of six Ruspolia species are described, demonstrating the degree of sympatry between these species. 3. Song types of the six species in addition to two further so-called subspecies are described with some indication as to the song structure, time of singing and habitat preferences. 4. Comment is made on the stability of the carrier frequency in this genus and the degree of flexibility of characters producing the song type in resonant and non-resonant systems. 5. Acoustic isolation is discussed in relation to the female phonoresponse to the syllable repetition rate and the possible influence of the song in maintaining male/male separation in a biotope.
