The prevalence ofToxoplasma gondiiin meat animals and cats in central Scotland

Abstract
The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in meat animals and cats in central Scotl and was measured by serological examination for antibody using the Sabin-Feldman dye-test. Of 250 each of cattle, sheep and pigs, 2·8, 15·2 and 9·2%, respectively, possessed significant antibody titres: 28·0% of 100 stray cats and 19·4% of 36 domiciled cats also had dye-test antibody. No significant sex or age-linked variations were observed in the prevalence of antibody. In faecal samples collected from the stray cats, 12·0% contained oocysts of Isospora (= Levineia) felis, 2·4% I. rivolta and 2·0% T. gondii. The results are compared with those of similar surveys.
