Abstract
Prenatal and infant mortality claim substantially more years of life and future productivity in the USA than any of the 3 "killer" diseases which are the targets of programs recommended by the President''s Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer, and Stroke. The analysis presented indicates that competing claims for health resources for programs to reduce mortality need to be evaluated primarily in terms of the age selection of the causes of death under consideration.
