Abstract
Estradiol benzoate (as a standard), alpha estradiol, estrone, and beta estradiol were bioassayed using withdrawal bleeding from previously stimulated uteri of postmenopausal women as an assay endpoint. Estradiol and estrone were about equally effective in causing withdrawal bleeding; each was about 2/3 as effective as estradiol benzoate. The doses of estradiol benzoate required to cause half of the postmenopausal women to bleed was 2.48 mg. 3 times per week for 3 weeks as compared to a dosage of only 1.06 mg. 3 times per week for 3 weeks necessary to produce a like response in young castrates. A similar dosage relationship holds true for estrone. Beta estradiol was found to be altogether ineffective in a total dosage of 45 mg. given over a 3-week period. Keywords
