Abstract
Robertson''s (1957) solution for optimum number of sires to test in a progeny testing scheme has been extended to take into account the number of offspring (n) per dam and the number of mates (d) per sire. Although genetic gain ( [DELTA] G) is maximum when n = 1, the loss is quite small for n as large as 10 when heritability is low. Also, in the case of low heritability, increasing d much above 5 is not critical, because no sharp optimum in A G is reached.
