Schizochlaenion gen. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales), a new red algal genus from the north-eastern North Pacific

Abstract
SCHIZOCHLAENION rhodotrichum gen. et sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) is described from deepwater collections made from several sites along the northeastern North Pacific Ocean (Washington [USA], British Colubia [Canada] and Alaska) and the Bering Sea. Female, cystocarpic and tetrasporic specimens are described. Distinctive characteristics of this alga include the transverse division of the 7-9 pericentral cells into at least 2, but as many as 5 pericentral cell derivatives and the irregular, staggered appearance of these pericentral cell derivatives resulting from the haphazard segmentation of the pericentral cells. Radially branched, pigmented trichoblasts are produced, and the tetrasporangia tend to swell at maturity, producing stichidia-like axes. This combination of traits relates this taxon to the tribe Brongniartelleae.
