Abstract
The cephalosporinase profiles, sensitivity to the .beta.-lactamase inhibitors cloxacillin, pCMB [p-chloromercuribenzoate] and clavulanic acid, and isoelectric points of the .beta.-lactamases from penicillin-resistant Bacteroides species were determined. B. fragilis, B. thetaiotaomicron, B. vulgatus and B. uniformis produced distinct but related (Group 1) .beta.-lactamases sensitive to all 3 inhibitors. The resistance of B. fragilis isolates to .beta.-lactam antibiotics was related to the amount of .beta.-lactamase produced and to the extent of the permeability barrier. B. asaccharolyticus, B. melaninogenicus, B. bivius and B. oralis produced enzymes of a different nature (Group 2) inhibited only by clavulanic acid. Within this class, B. oralis had a distinct substrate profile but further subdivision proved impossible because of the irreproducibility of substrate profiles. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
